Definition of Fashion

Fashion

Fashion is a form of self-expression and autonomy at a particular period and place, as reflected in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, hairstyle, body posture, and other aspects of the individual’s appearance. It also describes a way of behaving that a discernable proportion of a social group temporarily adopts, exhibiting an attitude, behavior or other characteristic, usually perceived as socially appropriate, in a given situation (e.g., school or work).

The term “fashion” may be used to refer to a single style or trend, or to a collection of styles or trends that are collectively referred to as a fashion movement. In most cases, it is used to describe a new or developing style, often with reference to a specific time period.

Definitions of Fashion

The word fashion is derived from the Latin phrase ‘fashioneta’ meaning ‘to change.’ In modern usage, fashion is a process by which the public accepts and wears certain looks. It is a socio-cultural phenomenon that varies widely, with some fashions having a relatively long life and others rapidly fading away.

When a trend begins, it goes through several stages until it is adopted by a majority of consumers. These stages are the introduction stage, where consumers first adopt a trend; the maturation stage, where the style begins to be considered old-fashioned or worn out; and finally, the decline or demise phase, when a trend loses its appeal and is considered out of date.

Trends in fashion are closely related to events and media, as well as to the interests of people. For example, the short skirts and boots of 1960 are closely associated with the sit-com “90210.” The baggy pants of the 1980s are also closely linked to hip-hop music.

During the twentieth century, fashion began to be more important in the United States than it was in Europe or Japan. Magazines such as Vogue, which began in 1902, started covering fashion regularly and introducing it to a mass audience. The popularity of television, especially in the United States, also led to a greater emphasis on fashion.
